How Trump Accounts Work for FIRE

The Account
Trump Accounts (Section 530A, signed July 4, 2025) open for contributions on July 4, 2026. Children born Jan 1, 2025 – Dec 31, 2028 receive a $1,000 government seed. Families contribute up to $5,000/year. Investments are limited to broad U.S. index funds with expense ratios ≤0.10%.
The Coast FIRE Strategy
Coast FIRE means accumulating enough early that compounding alone reaches your FIRE number — no further contributions needed. Maxing a Trump Account from birth can put a child on Coast FIRE before they graduate high school, achieving a $1M+ portfolio by their 40th birthday with zero additional saving.
The Roth Move at 18
At 18, the account mandatorily converts to a Traditional IRA. Most children should immediately convert to a Roth IRA — at 18, the $16,100 standard deduction and 10–12% brackets minimize the tax cost. Converting ~$191K costs ~$15,000–$20,000 in taxes but unlocks $4M–$5M in permanently tax-free Roth growth by retirement.
